What Is Root Canal Treatment?
Root canal treatment (endodontic treatment) is a procedure to remove infected or inflamed pulp tissue from inside a tooth. The pulp — which contains nerves and blood vessels — can become infected due to deep decay, a cracked tooth, or trauma. Without treatment, the infection spreads, causing an abscess and ultimately tooth loss. Root canal treatment saves the tooth and eliminates the infection.

The Microscopic Root Canal Process – Step by Step
Diagnosis & Digital X-Rays / CBCT Scan
We take detailed periapical X-rays and, where needed, a CBCT (3D cone beam) scan to map the exact anatomy of your root canal system including the number of canals, their curvature, and the extent of any infection.
Local Anaesthesia
Profound local anaesthesia is administered to ensure you are completely comfortable throughout. We use the latest anaesthetic techniques including intraligamentary injections for teeth that are difficult to numb conventionally.
Rubber Dam Isolation
A rubber dam (a thin sheet of latex or latex-free material) is placed around the tooth to isolate it completely from saliva and bacteria. This is essential for infection control and is a hallmark of high-quality endodontic treatment.
Access & Canal Location Under Microscope
Using the dental operating microscope at high magnification, we create a precise access cavity and locate all root canals including hidden, calcified, or extra canals that would be missed without microscopic vision.
Canal Shaping with Rotary NiTi Files
Flexible nickel-titanium (NiTi) rotary instruments are used to carefully shape and clean the root canals. Electronic apex locators precisely determine the working length of each canal to ensure complete cleaning without over instrumentation.
Irrigation & Disinfection
The canals are thoroughly irrigated with sodium hypochlorite and EDTA solutions to dissolve organic tissue and kill bacteria. Ultrasonic activation of the irrigant ensures it penetrates into the finest lateral canals and dentinal tubules.
Canal Obturation (Filling)
The cleaned and shaped canals are filled with gutta percha (a biocompatible rubber material) and a sealer using warm vertical compaction the gold standard obturation technique that ensures a hermetic, three dimensional seal.
Restoration & Crown
Following root canal treatment, the tooth is restored with a core build up and, in most cases, a porcelain crown to protect it from fracture. A root treated tooth without a crown is significantly more likely to fracture and be lost.
